Use this untapped force for learning | Podcast Episode 281

I know you’re wondering: what is this untapped force? It’s… Wait for it…

Several factors have combined to illustrate for me the amazing power of being bored.

I share about these factors in this episode, and I also share about how they are helping me understand that us humans need boredom in our lives. We need to “get comfortable with being uncomfortable,” as next week’s guests on our show will share. (To find out who they are, you’ll have to tune in next week. All I can say here is that I am so excited to bring you such a wonderful and life-affirming conversation : )

Today, I’m sharing 3 practical ways you can foster boredom, bring it into your family’s life, without going insane!

Cheat sheet on the 3 practical ways to foster boredom (without going nuts)

1) Be together.
There is a special kind of togetherness that, once your kiddos are bigger, you don’t see so much anymore. So shelve the screens, and embrace being together, and just see what happens.

2) Start super small.
What is the boredom/family togetherness equivalent of “a single push-up”? That’s what we’re going for here.

3) Bring in open-ended, tactile experiences.
We’ve been doing a digital reset in our home, and it’s meant an awful lot of being bored! Planning for open-ended, tactile experiences (like going outside and experiencing the feel of lovely cool breezes, digging in the soil, and tasting fresh raspberries) has meant success, and a wonderful realization of the value of these quiet moments together.
